A few weeks back now, Chloe from VIVA Skin Clinics reached out to me about my thoughts on getting some treatments done with the amazing Dr Rupert, who owns VIVA. To be totally honest, up until this point, I'd never really ever given much thought into any sort of cosmetic treatments or enhancements - it's just something that had never crossed my mind. I've always been pretty happy with my lips, they're average size. I've seen dermatologists in the past for my Psoriasis, but all of this has been totally new to me, which is why I was so interested when Viva got in touch with me. They want to shift the negative connotations surrounding aesthetics - particularly that some think it's frightening, unnatural and drastic - and give people an account of a real and honest experience, from someone that has never had any type of enhancement/procedure before.
First, let me start with the obvious - getting something like a lip enhancement is NOT plastic surgery. It's in no way as major as something like a boob job or butt implants. Something like that is a whole different playing field, and I'll be honest and tell you that I wouldn't ever consider plastic surgery for myself (I'm not adversed to it, I just don't see it for myself as I like myself as I am).
So, let's crack on shall we! I made an appointment for a consultation with Dr. Rupert, and in the couple of weeks leading up to this, I was still pretty undecided as to what to have done. Viva cover a range of different treatments, ranging from things like lip enhancements, to skin treatments, and the other treatment I debated was a Chemical Peel (this is basically a blend of powerful ingredients applied to the face in a gel/cream form for a few minutes, which peels off over the course of a few days, leaving evenly toned skin and treats things like facial scars).
When it finally came to meeting with Dr. Rupert, we discussed my options and decided to opt for both. (I'm having the peel in January so there will be another post on that). Dr. Rupert genuinely is the nicest guy ever, he makes you feel so comfortable and is so chatty - I literally forgot he was even my doctor and that we were having a consultation, we just started chatting about so many things! We booked in the lip enhancement for 2 weeks time, so I returned this past Thursday for my treatment. We decided to only go for 0.5ml, this would create a plumper lip instead of increasing them massively in size (it would make them the tiniest bit bigger, and I mean tiniest bit), which was what I wanted. Dr. Rupert said to me the aim was for people to think 'oh, she has nice lips', not 'oh, she's had a lip enhancement'.
On Thursday as I was making my way to VIVA, not going to lie, I was beginning to feel pretty nervous. The whole tube journey there, my boyfriend thought it would be funny to wind me up, so I literally could have punched him in the face (hahaha, soz). I think I was mainly getting nervous as I'm not exactly the number one fan of needles anyway (I had to be held down by my mum to have a blood test once, haven't had one since thank god), and the idea of having a needle in my lip wasn't exactly making me jump for joy. I was also having those typical thoughts that everyone has the first time they have something like this done - 'what if it goes wrong? what if it doesn't suit me? what if they're waaaay too big?'. All these thoughts crossed my mind, purely out of nervousness, but I think that's pretty normal for someone to think like that at first. But when I saw Dr. Rupert, I felt so much better just by him being there. He took my mind off of it by talking to me about other things, we had a laugh beforehand and assured me I would be absolutely fine as he knew my fear of needles.
Before having the injections, Dr. Rupert first applied a numbing cream all over my lip area which would be left on for 10-15 mins so it would reach optimum 'numbness' for me and I wouldn't be able to feel much. I was about 3 minutes in and in the middle of a conversation with Dr. Rupert, before my lips went numb and I couldn't pronounce my words as properly (this is a guaranteed laugh as it's so funny when it happens, so if this doesn't make you feel better, what will?). After my lips had been properly numbed, it was time for the injections. I had four in the top lip - 1 in each corner and then 1 in each side of the cupids bow - and 2 either side of the middle of my bottom lip. Now let me tell you, I have an EXTREMELY bad tolerance of pain (I find literally everything painful), but this wasn't painful at all. To be honest it just feels like a small pinch, and I would say the most uncomfortable part of the injection is actually when you feel the needle in your lip, which is only a few seconds. So, I'm pretty sure that if the biggest pain-related wimp in the world can make it through and say it was fine, then anyone can!
Afterwards, the swelling kicked in about 3-6 hours after. Some people say that it hurts after, but if I'm honest, mine didn't hurt, it was just a bit of a weird sensation at first that lasts for a few days. At first, you can't frown your lip or pout, but after a few days when they soften then they just eventually feel normal.
I'm writing this post 3 days later, and now my swelling has almost completely gone down (aside from the corner of my lip is still a little swollen), I am SO pleased with the results! They look completely natural and just how I wanted them to look afterwards, and I bet that if I hadn't of told you that I'd had them done, then you'd never of known. I would honestly say that I would love to keep my lips like this forever, and seeing as they last for 6-9 months, I would love to have them topped up again. Although I would never go bigger than how they are now!
I wanted people to know that you can have something like this done, and done basically perfectly - not like the ridiculous huge great big trout pouts that people associate lip enhancements with. And I also wouldn't go anywhere other than Viva to have this done now, as I can't recommend Dr. Rupert enough. He actually feels like my friend instead of just my doctor, and I feel like he is without a doubt pioneering the way for natural aesthetics.
The photos below were taken immediately before and immediately after treatment. You can see the difference, it is really subtle and natural.
Please note: I received these treatments for free in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are honest and are my own.
